Risk Factors Genetics and Screening

Ovarian, Fallopian or Primary Peritoneal Cancer Risk Factors

There is no specific risk factor associated with all forms of ovarian cancer. There has been some research, however, that has revealed there are some factors that seem to increase the chances for developing epithelial ovarian cancer. The following risk factors apply to epithelial ovarian cancer as well as fallopian and primary peritoneal cancer:

    Age: the average age of women diagnosed with ovarian, fallopian or primary peritoneal cancer is 60 years.

Gynecologic Cancer Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is a research study in which people volunteer to take part in tests of new drugs or procedures. In cancer care, these studies are designed to test the safety and effectiveness of new treatments for cancer. Clinical trials can offer promising treatment options for patients with gynecologic cancers, depending on the type of cancer and particular situation.

Vulvar Cancer

Vulvar cancer is a rare gynecologic cancer that begins in the outer part of the female genitals including the opening of the vagina, clitoris, labia majora (outer lips), labia minora (inner lips), and surrounding skin and tissue.

There are several different types of vulvar cancer including:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma:
    Squamous cells are one of three cell types that create the muscles, skin and nerves in the body. In this case, these are the skin cells. This is the most common form of vulvar cancer.
  • Adenocarcinoma:
