Phases of Trial

Pilot/Feasibility Study: Used to check on the time, cost and success rate of a study on a small scale to help researchers decide how or if it should be expanded to a larger group.

Phase 1: Used to find the right dosage of test drug and/or how best to deliver the drug (for example, by mouth or in a vein).

Phase 2: Used to find out if the new treatment works against the cancer and/or whether the new treatment has a good or bad effect on the person.

Phase 3: Compares the new treatment to a current one.

Phase 4: Looks at long-term safety and effectiveness of the new treatment.

  • What are clinical trials?

Clinical research focuses on finding new ways to improve health in people. This may include how to:

    • Prevent cancer
    • Find cancer
    • Treat cancer
    • Improve quality of life for people who have cancer

  • Key Facts About Clinical Trials

    Safety Is the Top Priority

To protect your safety, researchers must go through many steps to prove the treatment or intervention being studied is as safe as possible and might be better than standard treatments. This starts with many years of research in the lab, looking at how the treatment works in cells and animals.

For all clinical trials, the study team develops a detailed plan called a protocol, which explains how the study will work and the possible risks and benefits. The team also must get approval from an Institutional Review Board, or IRB. This group is tasked with protecting people who join studies. They review the plans and monitor the study to ensure safety.

If at any point, the research team or IRB suspects that the risks of the study intervention outweigh the benefits, they will stop the study immediately and you will be informed.

  • Quality of Life Clinical Trials

Improving comfort and ease of living for individuals with cancer

Patients with cancer experience a variety of symptoms due to their disease and its treatment, such as pain, fatigue, and nausea, that can have a significant negative impact on their well-being and functioning. The development of multidimensional self-report Quality of Life (QOL) instruments has allowed investigators to measure the adverse impact of disease and its treatment on well-being and functioning and evaluate the efficacy of interventions designed to prevent or treat these adverse effects. Findings from QOL research suggest that routine use of QOL instruments as part of clinical practice has the potential to improve the quality of care that patients receive as well as their health status.
