Radiation and Radiosurgery

The Neuro-oncology program offers leading edge radiation and radiosurgery treatment

Our team of leading-edge radiation oncologists provide expert care for any type of brain or spinal tumors. For tumors that are well-localized in the brain, conformal radiation is often recommended. This is radiation delivered to the tumor and to a small surrounding area of brain, but it avoids other areas of the brain.

However, whole-brain radiation is sometimes recommended when multiple tumors may be present throughout brain, including undetectable areas. Conformal radiotherapy and whole-brain radiation are generally delivered five days per week for two to six weeks.

For brain and the spinal tumors, stereotactic radiosurgery is also available. This is radiation that is very precisely targeted to a small area of brain or spinal cord. It is delivered all at once in a single day, saving patients from undergoing multiple surgeries. These procedures include:

  • Advanced linear accelerators, or LINAC: Treats all types of tumors in an extremely precise manner, permitting us to make finer adjustments. The LINAC also can be used to successfully target small lesions or deep, inaccessible lesions.

  • Frameless neurosurgical stereotactic radiotherapy: With advanced technique that no longer requires a frame to hold the head in place for the highly focused radiotherapy of the brain, our team is able to better target the brain cancer with radiation while protecting surrounding brain tissue for improved neurological outcomes.

  • Spine stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT): A form of high-dose radiation that requires just one to three treatments. SBRT has delivered greater than 90 percent pain reduction and more effectively controlled tumor growth beyond one-year post-treatment.
