Why did my physician refer me to the Cancer Genetics Clinic?

Your doctor recognized some features about your personal and/or family history which raised concern about inherited risk factors for cancer. It is important to determine if you or your family members have genetic risk factors in order to help determine the best way to manage your health care.

Is my appointment covered by insurance?

In general, if you have coverage to see a specialist at the University of Michigan, you will have similar coverage to be seen in the Cancer Genetics Clinic. Our billing services team will preauthorize your clinic visit. If there are concerns about the coverage, you will receive a phone call from a member of our team.

What billing codes are used for the visit?

99245 - Outpatient consult OR 99205 - New patient visit

What billing codes are used for the genetic testing?

In general, it is most important to verify coverage for the appointment. Coverage for the genetic testing often requires additional information gathered at your appointment. Our billing services team will check some of the common genetic testing codes prior to your appointment, and will let us know in advance if further information will be required for testing authorization.

Do I need a referral?

We do see patients who are self-referred. However, you may need a referral from your primary care physician for insurance reasons. Please check with your insurance company.

How long will my appointment take?

In general, please allot 1 - 1.5 hours.

Can a friend, family member or other support person accompany me to my appointment?

Yes. If you plan to bring more than 1-2 people, please notify us in advance to ensure we have a room big enough to accommodate everyone.

My family member and I were both referred to the clinic. Can we be seen at the same time?

Yes, we can evaluate multiple referred family members together, but each family member will need to schedule an individual appointment.

How long do genetic test results take?

Depending on the test, results may be available as quickly as 2 weeks, or may take up to 3 months.

Do I have to have genetic testing at the appointment? Can I have genetic testing at the appointment?

Coming to the consultation does not mean you must undergo genetic testing, but that you are interested in learning more. If you and the clinician decide genetic testing is indicated, blood can be drawn at the conclusion of your appointment.
