Stoffel to focus on cancer disparities; An will work in screening and prevention

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center has named two new assistant directors to help facilitate and enhance its community outreach and engagement efforts. Elena Stoffel, M.D., M.P.H., will be assistant director of cancer disparities outreach and Lawrence An, M.D., will be assistant director for cancer screening and prevention.

Stoffel will establish strategic direction and engage members in community outreach activities with a focus on cancer disparities. She is an associate professor of gastroenterology and director of the Rogel Cancer Center’s Cancer Genetics Clinic. She serves as co-principal investigator of an NCI Cancer Moonshot grant to improve identification of patients and families at high risk for cancer and expand access to cancer genetic testing in Michigan.

Stoffel’s clinical and research expertise will help advance the center’s efforts to reduce cancer health disparities in the state and beyond.

An will lead a new initiative called Cancer Next Steps, or CaNS, an outreach project to improve delivery of cancer screening and prevention services statewide. The effort will initially be done in collaboration with the Michigan Primary Care Association, a statewide network of Federally Qualified Health Centers, as well as other partner organizations.

An is an associate professor of general medicine and co-director of the Rogel Cancer Center’s Center for Health Communications Research. His research focuses on developing and implementing tailored evidence-based interventions, which will be a key part of the CaNS project.

“Reaching all people in communities around Michigan to improve cancer prevention and care is a critical part of our mission,” says Eric Fearon, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Rogel Cancer Center. “The additions of Dr. Stoffel and Dr. An to the Community Outreach and Engagement team will enable us to implement robust programs to address cancer health disparities and cancer screening and prevention throughout the state.”
