U-M joins nation’s cancer centers in endorsement of HPV vaccination for cancer prevention

In response to low national vaccination rates for the human papillomavirus, the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center has joined 69 of the nation’s top cancer centers in issuing a statement urging for increased HPV vaccination for the prevention of cancer.

Thyroid Cancer and Genetics

An abnormal gene has been found in patients with some forms of thyroid cancer., such as medullary thyroid cancer. If this cancer is diagnosed, the patient may have been born with a certain abnormal gene which may have led to the cancer. Family members may have also inherited this abnormal gene. Tests have been developed to determine who has the genetic defect long before any cancer appears. It is standard in the Multidisciplinary Endocrine Oncology Clinic to offer genetic counseling and a complete genetic evaluation to some of our thyroid cancer patients.

Since 1975, the number of people diagnosed with thyroid cancer has tripled. It is now the ninth most common cancer in the United States.

Although most patients survive thyroid cancer, the treatment can bring with it significant stress, work interruption, increased medical costs and, in some cases, long-lasting side effects related to treatment.
