Researchers find key genetic driver for rare type of triple-negative breast cancer

By developing a new mouse model to study a poorly understood protein, researchers uncovered its link to metaplastic breast cancer, opening the door to better understanding of this challenging breast cancer subtype.

Types of Breast Cancer

In order to understand breast cancer and how to treat it, it's important to understand how breasts work. Breasts are made up of lobules -- glands that produce milk -- and ducts which carry the milk from the lobule to the nipple (when milk is being produced). The ducts and lobules are surrounded by fatty breast tissue.

Study finds ‘striking’ use of double mastectomy

Nearly half of early stage breast cancer patients considered having double mastectomy and one in six received it – including many who were at low risk of developing a second breast cancer, a new study finds.

Predicting throat cancer recurrence with a blood test

Researchers found that patients whose oropharyngeal cancer recurred had higher levels of antibodies for two proteins, E6 and E7, which are found in HPV-fueled cancers. The finding suggests a potential blood-based marker that could predict when cancer is likely to return.

Overview Leukemia and Lymphoma

The "Liquid Tumors"

Health professionals often refer to leukemia and lymphoma as "liquid tumors". Also called blood cancers, these cancers can affect the bone marrow, the blood cells and the lymphatic system.

Every 4 minutes, 1 person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer, according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Leukemia and lymphoma are often grouped together and considered related cancers because they probably all result from acquired mutations to the DNA of a single lymph- or blood-forming stem cell.

Cancer patients take comfort in peer stories on online forums

When faced with potentially life-threatening diseases such as cancer, people often seek information about the disease and support from peers.

Patient Navigation

What is Patient Navigation?

The healthcare system is complex and can be overwhelming under the best of circumstances. For patients facing a cancer diagnosis, it can seem impossible to manage. That's where patient navigation can be helpful. By providing this service, we help educate, support, and empower patients throughout their cancer journey. The patient navigator connects individuals to resources within Michigan Medicine and in the community.
