Lesly Ann Dossett MD



Dr. Lesly Dossett MD, MPH is Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Dossett is an Honors Program and Summa Cum Laude graduate of Western Kentucky University. She earned her medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2003, attending on a United States Navy Health Professions Scholarship. She completed general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2010, where she served as Administrative Chief Resident. During a two year post-doctoral research fellowship, she was awarded an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) training grant and obtained a Masters in Public Health with a focus on epidemiology, patient-centered outcomes, quality and policy. During this time she received numerous local, regional and national awards for excellence in research, including being named the Association of Women Surgeons Resident of the Year in 2010.

After completing residency, she entered active duty with the United States Navy where she served as a Staff Surgeon in various roles stateside and overseas. She completed two deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom including serving as Ship’s Surgeon on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and as a member of the 1st Marine Logistic Group Shock Trauma Platoon in Afghanistan. She received multiple ribbons and awards for her service including the Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (2 awards).

After fulfillment of her active duty obligation in 2014, Dr. Dossett entered clinical fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL in 2014. She joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2016.

Dr. Dossett’s clinical focus is on breast cancer, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, sarcoma and complex GI malignancies. She has expertise in breast conservation therapy, skin and nipple sparing mastectomy, minimally invasive lymphadenectomy, and regional therapies for cutaneous malignancies.

Dr. Dossett’s academic focus is on health care delivery and decision making, and the interface between primary care providers and cancer specialists. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of 7 professional societies including the Society for Surgical Oncology, the Association for Academic Surgeons and the Surgical Outcomes Club.
