Jagsi discusses advances in radiation therapy with U.S. News

An article in U.S. News and World Report titled "The Future of Treatment for Metastatic Breast Cancer" describes recent advances and improvements in treatment for advanced breast cancer. Reshma Jagsi, M.D., D.Phil., professor and deputy chair of radiation oncology at Michigan Medicine, cites examples of how radiation therapy is playing a role.

"But more recently, there’s been quite a bit of interest in harnessing radiation therapy to either prolong life or potentially even cure” metastatic breast cancer in some patients, she's quoted as saying.

Two new approaches can be useful for patients with metastatic disease. A clinical trial is currently testing whether radiation can be used to kill metastatic tumors in their place. This could be useful for patients with only a few metastatic tumors. The other approach involves combining radiation with immunotherapy to enhance the anti-cancer effect.
